The Humility Score

Is there a place for humility in a world where self promotion is run amok? What are we missing when healthy humility is a lost practice?

The Nursery will be open from 9:45 AM to 11:30 AM to greet those three years old and under. They will be welcomed with open arms and engaged in gentle play. A snack of Cheerios will be offered. If you have allergy concerns however, please provide your own child’s snack.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES
10:00 AM ONLY, Pre-K through Grade 5
(Grades 6-12 are encouraged to worship in the Great Hall and volunteer for ushering, greeting, coffee hospitality and assisting with RE classes)

Pre-K and Kindergarten:  ”Getting to Know You” — The students will be involved in Chalice Circle, song, and artistic giftmaking for dads and other significant males in their lives.

Grades 1-5: “Getting to Know You” —  The students will be involved in Chalice Lighting Worship, song, games and artistic giftmaking for dads and other significant males in their lives.

Note: The UU Super Heroes summer curriculum will begin next week.

Volunteers who will be teaching Religious Education classes this summer are required to attend an orientation on Sunday, June 16. The orientation will begin promptly at  9-9:45 AM so that teachers can get ready for their classes during Sunday service at 10 AM. 

Enjoy meeting other teachers, learn about our policies and practices, and get an overview of the UU Heroes curriculum.  Childcare will be provided and light refreshments will be available.

The Moneyless Yard Sale is an exchange of goods among members and friends of First UU. It’s also a community-building event that is simple, fun and beneficial on several levels. We welcome you to come and find something. The yard sale will be set up in the courtyard starting at 11:30 AM.

Vespers is a shorter, reflective service held Wednesdays at 5:30 PM. Reminder, there will be no Simple Supper during the summer.

Every group in the congregation is asked to send a representative (or two) to the Leaders Meeting on Saturday, July 6 from 9:30-11:30 AM. We’ll cover plans for the church renovations, including the times for moving, new procedures for use of space, and scheduling of events.  This is the best way to know what will be happening!

One attendee of an earlier meeting said, “Not only will you get factual information about the upcoming church transformation, you’ll be inspired to think about how you can help maintain your own connections and commitments and sustain the whole community during a challenging time.”

The Books of Summer

As we look ahead to summer vacation and children being out of school, we consider the ways books changes our lives. Please join us for a joyful celebration as children participate in the service through worship and song. (Note there will be no religious education classes. All students are welcome to join their friends and family in the Great Hall.)

Our annual picnic follows at the picnic shelter near Dogwood Dell. Bring a book to give to a student at Greene Elementary School.

Please join us on Friday, June 7 for our monthly gathering. We will begin with a simple meal of soup and bread at 5:30 PM in the Douglasdale Studio. Then, there will be a worship service at 6:30 PM that will last about half an hour.

We call the gathering “Bread for the Journey” because each of us is traveling a path. With intention, we are traveling a path of choice, one reflective of our values and aspirations. Our journey requires the bread of hope, love and support.

The evening will be “communal,” “musical,” and “embodied.”

• Communal means that the value of attendance and participation is high.  Each person who comes should be welcome to bring their whole self, including their struggles, to the gathering.  If something difficult is going on right now, they will have opportunity to name it, include it. Sometimes it will be a difficult task they have been given, the care of a loved one, the struggle to do work ethically. Other times it will be a chosen effort, perhaps a ministry in the congregation like the work of stewardship, multiculturalism or caring roles.  The idea is to bring to this community event both the struggles and the celebrations we encounter in our many journeys. We break bread to nourish and get to know one another better.
• Musical refers to the act of singing and how it brings us together. Singing is a ritual act where our voices, our words, our very breath come together. With the help of dear friends of the New Beginning Choir, we want to sing from our hearts and sing ourselves into hope. The service will have lots of singing.
• Embodied refers to being attentive to our physical selves. For those who appreciate worship with motion, movement and expression, this event will nourish.

The annual picnic will be Sunday, June 9 following the 10 AM service. We’ll be at the picnic shelter near Dogwood Dell and the Carillon across from Maymont.

Hot dogs, hamburgers, turkey burgers, veggie burgers, water, buns and paper products will be provided. We ask you to bring your own beverages and one dish to share, along with chairs, blankets, and games for the children to play.

Ready to get your groove on? Join us on Sunday, June 9 from 4-6 PM in the Great Hall for a Drum Circle that will have you shaking, tapping, and pounding out some inspiring communal rhythms. All instruments and song guidance will be provided by Connie Ralston, a longtime drum workshop facilitator, wonderful storyteller, and a member of the UU Fellowship of the Peninsula in Newport News.

No experience is necessary, so people of all abilities are welcome. Workshop fee is $10 per person (fee will only be $5 if attendance is 30 or more). A minimum of 15 people is required and there will be a maximum of 50 people.
