Beacon Press –Printing/ bookstore arm of the Unitarian Universalist Association

CARITAS – Congregations around Richmond involved to assure shelter. Catholic relief service coordinating with local and national churches, organizations, etc. Richmond UU Church participates by providing shelter services for homeless for one week each year.

CVFB – Central Virginia FoodBank. Procures and distributes food to agencies providing services for poor and disadvantaged.

First News – Newsletter of First UU Church of Richmond.

First UU – First Unitarian Universalist Church. Even the church building terms has its own unique names:

Great Hall – Large room where Sunday Services and major church and community functions are held

Main Entrance – Entrance off of the parking lot behind the church

Douglasdale Entrance- Side entrance off of Douglasdale Avenue

Library – Room at far right of vestibule when entering church through Main Entrance

ICGR – Interfaith Council of Greater Richmond. Builds communication and understanding among faith and interfaith organizations in Metropolitan Richmond.

MICAH Initiative – City wide effort to help children read better. Richmond UU Church is involved through the Green School Project.

OWL – Our Whole Lives. UU Sex Education Program for 8th and 9th graders.

RE -Term commonly used for Religious Education.

RE Council – Religious Education Council. Oversees and implements all aspects of life span education for Richmond UU Church.

SRC – Social Responsibility Council – an umbrella group that reflects the social consciousness of First UU Church. Provides both education and social action.

SUUSI – Southeast Unitarian Universalist Summer Institute. A week- long festival of recreation, fellowship and educational programs held annually in Virginia.

SWIM –Southeast Winter Institute of Miami. A week-long gathering similar to SUUSI but held in the winter.

TJ District – Thomas Jefferson District. One of five Unitarian Universalist districts in the U. S. Includes part or all of the states of VA., N. C., S. C., GA, and Tenn.

UUA – Unitarian Universalist Association headquartered in Boston.

UUA Bookstore.

UUA General Assembly – Unitarian Universalist General Assembly. Annual meeting held for one week in selected city. Delegates appointed by individual churches.

UUSC – Unitarian Universalist Service Committee –Advances human rights and social justice throughout the U. S. and the world.

UU World – Magazine of the Unitarian Universalist Association.

Welcoming Congregation –A UU congregation committed to welcoming gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender persons.

YRUU – Young Religious Unitarian Universalist.
