Surrey Down to a Soulful Supper!
As you may have heard, 1st UU is re-starting our after-Vespers supper program!
As we come out of Covid, our Simple Supper is reborn as Soulful Supper. Before Covid, Simple Suppers were a weekly press, exhausting to the organizers, to amass volunteers to spread a nourishing meal. Now, monthly, we’ll surrey down to a Soulful Supper!
The First Wednesday of each month, immediately following Vespers, one of our numerous, fabulous Small Groups will host a dinner, open to all. The nature of each meal will be up to the Group preparing it for that month: it may be a simple supper, possibly to follow the theme of the Vespers message, or it could be a celebration of a holy day or other event significant to members of our Community. Besides being an opportunity for our Groups to show us what they got in culinary skills and imagination, these are an excellent Group building exercise and time for developing Community at the person-to-person level.
The Inaugural Soulful Supper will be hosted by 1st UU’s Kitchen Committee, immediately following Vespers on Wednesday, October 12th, with dinner served at 6:45.
Subsequent Soulful Suppers will be served following Vespers on November 2nd and December 7th, 2022, and January 4th, February 1st, March 1st, April 5th, May 3rd, and June 7th, 2023.
We invite our Small Groups to step up and volunteer to host on any of these dates.
We need a Volunteer Group to take the Nov. 2nd slot PDQ! The Kitchen Committee can assist.
Hosting Soulful Suppers comes with several provisos:
- Dinner must be prepared and ready to serve by 6:45 pm.
- Each Group must be able to staff for food preparation, table set-up, food & beverage service and clean-up, including dishwashing, takedown, and restoration of the kitchen and lower level meeting room to pre-dinner condition.
- Each Group must have at least one person present who has completed our Kitchen Equipment Training Course, and the ServSafe Food Handler online course for food safety and sanitation training. Completion of this training has additional benefits: your Group can then have access to the kitchen for other events you may sponsor. This training is required for all kitchen access, regardless of whether your Group hosts a Soulful Supper.
How to Get Involved:
- To schedule your Group to sponsor a Soulful Supper, please contact Larry Landon at LLLandon1stUU@gmail.com or 602-350-0620.
- To schedule Group Members for Kitchen Equipment Training, please contact Rick Carr at Rick_Carr@comcast.net or 804-248-8186.
- For Food Safety & Sanitation training, go to https://www.servsafe.com/ServSafe-Food-Handler and complete the Food Handler online course. Please let Rick Carr know you have completed the course. Completion of both training courses is required for all kitchen access (You’ll be glad you did! The 7 Principles come alive in this training).
Thanks, Everyone! C’mon and surrey down to a Soulful Supper!
