Spot The Scam Email

Faith Community Partners,

In this world of electronic communication, emails get compromised on a consistent basis. Even more unfortunate, is that our houses of worship fall victim to this as well.

To ensure you are receiving proper communication from your place of worship, and that the information is accurate, here are some tips to align yourself with to ensure you are being as safe as possible with your email communication:

  • Examine the sender’s address – check the email address to see if it’s unfamiliar or with slightly altered domain names
  • Avoid suspicious links or attachments – don’t open files or click links you suspect of being false
  • Check for generic greetings – if the opening to the email is very generic like “Greetings, customer” or “Hello Fellow Churchgoer” there may be something suspect about the email
  • Analyze the email’s tone and style – compare with emails known to be true from your place of worship to see if the tone and candor of the message is similar
  • Requesting personal information – legitimate organizations will not request personal information – if you are concerned, reach out to your house of worship directly
