Speaker Visual Descriptions
Why Are People Describing Themselves on Sundays?
Visual descriptions (also called self-descriptions) are a practice to increase inclusivity and accessibility for people who are blind or have low vision. Speakers share their name and briefly describe their physical appearance to provide people with low vision with the same information that sighted people receive just by looking at the screen or the speaker. While we encourage all speakers to give a visual description the first time they speak from the pulpit, this practice is completely optional. You can learn more about visual descriptions here: Guide to Inclusive Self-Descriptions for Presenters; It is part of an ongoing effort helping to make First UU accessible for all through the Congregational Accessibility Project.
